Behind the Lines 2011

The year’s best political cartoons, on the web and iPad,

Behind the Lines showcases a curated selection of the year’s best Australian political cartoons, exhibited first at the Museum of Australian Democracy, then travelling other locations around the country. We built a single implementation which spans website and iPad delivery.

As with our previous work with image collections we focused the design centrally on the content. We supplemented this approach with a quick navigation interface that made use of Backbone.js and the HTML5 history API. The CMS powering the site is a custom Ruby on Rails application with an admin management area: the application also tallies user votes and determines the people’s top ten cartoons.

We designed a special interface to suit iPads, used in–exhibition as voting kiosks. For the kiosks we also made use of HTML5 manifest caching, enabling the entire collection of images to be cached onto the machine – so when they travel around the country with the collection, bandwidth wasn’t an issue.
