A new The Thousands
Late last week we put the finishing touches on our latest project: The Thousands. A collaboration with Anthony Kolber, John McLennan and the team from Right Angle Studio The Thousands is online magazine covering the ’000 postcodes around Australia — Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. The magazine has been publishing since 2005 and has, er, thousands of loyal readers across the country.
Our role was creating a custom publishing system to replace their legacy WordPress install, including the joys of migrating the complex data and assets from the previous incarnation of the site (Tim may have some tips here if he ever recovers). We built them a modern Rails 3 app that allows the team of publishers and editors at The Thousands to administer all aspects of the site through a simple, beautiful, and straightforward interface. The site runs on Heroku’s cloud application platform — allowing us to easily handle spikes in traffic — and leverages Amazon S3 and the CloudFront CDN for super-fast image and asset loading.
Head over there and check it out now.
